This course builds upon the skills learned in the first course in this series DAX Power Pivot 10 Easy Steps for Beginners.
You have already gotten your hands dirty with DAX & Power Pivot and seen how awesome it is. Now you are ready to take your skills to the next level by delving deeper and acquiring a more thorough understanding of how Power Pivot handles Time data.
Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) includes Time Intelligence functions to support the needs of Business Intelligence analysis by enabling you to manipulate data using time periods, including days, months, quarters, and years, and then build and compare calculations over those periods.
Here’s what others had to say about the course:
So far it’s been easy to follow. The instructor is doing a great job of explaining what she is doing. Looking forward to more advanced topics. UPDATE: I’ve completed the course. It’s a great course and I’m glad I took this one, as well as DAX Power Pivot 10 Easy Steps for Beginners. I’ll be referencing the material often, there’s a lot on information that’s new to me. I really want to dive more into custom calendars and DAX patterns. I’ve already been showing my managers at work how powerful DAX functions can be. Gilly Dow did a fantastic job with both of her courses I took on Udemy. She’s very knowledgeable on Excel and Power Pivot topics and her enthusiasm and encouragement always shows in her lectures. She is very responsive to queries from her students; my questions were answered very quickly. I’ve taken other online courses where you never heard back if you were having problems; that’s definitely not an issue here.

This course covers those kind of details that are important yet sometimes forgotten when you’re learning!

My purpose in taking this course was initially twofold. First, and most importantly, I wanted to learn an approach for setting up a calendar table based on fiscal periods. This is a crucial task that must be implemented before one can even begin to generate accounting reports that will satisfy the matching principle. It’s a benchmark step, you gotta do it. Second, I wanted to learn the various DAX expressions listed in the What you’ll learn content. As it turns out I got much much more from this course! I got experience using DAX, along with the experience of creating an accounting report. What do I mean by experience. Fairly early on in the course I found myself creating and editing measures and pivot tables with skill and competence. Why? Because you get loads of practice in this course. I had fun with the course. I would to follow the well written handout first as a practice (i.e., WORK WITHOUT A NET) and then listen to Gilly’s excellent, easy to follow, video as a challenge and/or as a repeater. Repeater means ya done good. However, there were challenging times where I totally destroyed several of the 10 easy steps just following the handout first. As a consequence I would pay really close attention Gilly’s video which always revealed my missteps. As an added bonus for using such an approach, you will focus very intently on Gilly’s discussions that will reveal the subtle nuances (i.e., Gems) as to what’s going on under the hood with DAX formulas (i.e., context, CALCULATE, and FILTER). After completing the DAX Power Pivot Time Intelligence 10 Easy Steps course it is my opinion that this another smash hit at Carnegie Hall!

Just what I was looking for. Custom Calendars specifically important. Excellent building steps, encouragement, and great PDF to refer back to, as well as the spreadsheet we work on includes all we have learned, in a thoughtfully organized layout. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge!

DAX time intelligence functions are explained very clearly, even beginners should be able to follow. This course needs more practice exercises.

Although this class is focused on Power Pivot, I have been taking Gilly Dow’s courses to help me understand DAX in order to create Power BI dashboards. I have taken several other Power BI courses but her courses have provided me the most solid foundation. Morever, it’s great to take a course with someone very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge! Thank you, Gilly!

Moves fast. Volume is so low and full of bass, I had to download an equalizer to hear. There is a lot of thoroughness.

Awesome course! I’ve done Gill’s Intermediate, Advanced and Time intelligence courses and they are all great. Time intelligence however is the best one. The concepts are explained thoroughly and made relatively easy with relevant examples and cases. The section 5 which is a deepdive in Filter() really made me understand the concept of virtual tables.
