Thinking of learning to code, but a little unsure if you can do it? Overwhelmed by too much information? Don’t know where to start? Maybe you started a few times and got sidetracked and need to start over.  Most people who try to learn to code are actually people looking to acquire new skills, and not uni students. Most people who learn to code come from zero background and thats why they quit – if you have some prior coding background it’s much easier.  But if you don’t have any background or aren’t surrounded by programmers, well…it’s a long, frustrating and extremely difficult journey to do alone.

But, you are NOT alone.  I wasted almost a year of time and over $5000 in resources, most of which I didn’t complete because I got distracted or discouraged – often both.  And I quit three times in 2014, 2015 and 2017.  I quit because I made learning programming much, much, MUCH harder than it needs be.

Hindsight is 20–20.  When I finally became a developer (even working for Google) I realised there were basic, fundamental techniques that could have saved me a LOT of time and discouragement – and I would not have discovered them had it not been for one lucky break – I found a mentor who guided me on just 3 occasions. That’s all it took, to unblock me.

Instructor Details

Hello, I am Zubin. I spent almost 15 years in corporate law and commercial management. All through, I desperately wanted to learn to code. It seems so marvellously creative and relevant, right? I tried it out. It was confusing, difficult and overwhelming. So much so that I quit - TWICE. But I'd taught myself hard skills before - so what was different this time? It turns out that coding is steeped in myth, mystery and falsehoods, and each are perpetuated by the internet. It's like learning to code has its own dedicated FAKE NEWS channel... So, I focused on LEARNING to code rather than coding. And that changed the game. Completely. And I kept a journal of all the things I wish I'd known, that were false and that kept discouraging me. As I read over that journal I realised that it was a roadmap - and had someone given me that roadmap at the start I could have saved myself a few years, and LOTS of heartache and a great deal of money. And that's why you're seeing me as an instructor here. I need to give others that roadmap that I really wish I'd had. Good luck!

This is a fantastic course, thanks for creating it Zubin. The content is very clear, very easy to understand and for someone like me who is a real beginner offers an amazingly fast track to skill up in this area. I really enjoyed how candidly you spoke of the challenges you’ve faced and overcome.

I have tried to learn programming (Python) twice but left in between because of lack of motivation and patience but after starting this course, it is giving me the confidence to venture into it again. Admittedly, I’m only half way through or so, but I now see what I did wrong previously, and how easy it is to make those mistakes. Using these techniques, I’m finding my confidence and interest returning, and also excitement and energy to code. I hope others get the same benefit as me!:)

While this course gives me lots of useful information, the videos don t seem very well made and they can be hard to read.

You can knock this course out fairly quickly and come out in the end more prepared and equipped for most challenges in learning (not just coding)

Very good match for me . He hit on many points that I myself have gone through, as one who hit the floor running, with no idea where the heck I was going or how to get there. Just decided I wanted to be a developer ; picked up the computer and a class and thought I’d be able to do it. WRONG!!!! But since I’m stubborn , I was a lot more frustrated and did learn quite a bit a little sooner than later. I knew when to re group by walking away. The little breaks strengthed my resolve and kept me from busting up my computer on many ocassions. (shy smile.) The attitude of I refuse to allow this to beat me, has helped me through JavaScript on many ocassions. I’m still not an expert, but I’m better, I know a javaScript line of code when I see one. Found this course to be inspirational and very motivating. I’m so glad you took the time to make it. So many new coders need to hear just how difficult a new career choice can be. The part about how the Mark Zuckerberg’s of the world having to do what we’re trying to learn with less favorable tools than what we have now, really helped to put a positive spin on this for me. Like, Yeah ! , they had less places as resources to go to than I do, so if they could do it, I’m sure I can too. The Encouragement you’ve provided is just what we newbies needed, the old kick in the pants to get up off the pot or do your job. Thanks.

Good key points to get along in the world of coding. Really good coverage of all important questions. The sound quality sometimes was a little poor.
