This course will teach you how to create a theme in Shopify.
We won’t be showing you how to code HTML/CSS/JavaScript. There are plenty of fantastic courses on Udemy that do a better job at that. Instead, we’ll take an HTML template that has already been created for us and implement it into a fresh Shopify store. The goal is to teach developers/store owners how to create/customize their themes. Utilize Shopify’s framework and start building your own pages.
We’ll take a barebones approach, using Shopify’s Theme Kit to do our development. Meaning, we’ll start from the absolute minimum amount of code needed to have a Shopify theme and build from there. After going through this course, you’ll be able to understand Shopify’s framework and create your own theme. You’ll learn the Liquid templating language and see how themes dynamically take what has been configured in the Admin dashboard and present it to your user–facing store.
Since this course’s inception, there have been 3 main audiences:
Store owners. These are the folks who already own a store and want to be able to customize their stores.
Developers. People who know how to code already, they just need to learn how to do it with Shopify theming. This is a quick and easy course to get them up and running. These people typically start creating their own themes and start selling them.

Yes, it’s a good match. I work on a Mac also but I use BBEdit for coding. I also just finished working on a Shopify store for a client so I’m pretty familiar with the Shopify environment. So far so good If you are like me and new to this, you will want to check that the admin of your store is correctly set up, that your code in your local environment is correct, and that the code is correct inside of the store as well (theme watch is working properly). There were two spots where I was annoyed thinking the author’s work was outdated only to realize it was my fault.

I had a difficult time getting started. Sublime wasn’t working well for me. I switched to Atom Text Editor (Free). I had some run in’s setting everything up, ex. setting up ‘ThemeKit’, ‘Liquid’, etc. I spend an hour or two searching through Google trying to workaround the instructions given. Once everything was setup, I found the course to be very helpful and well explained. I’ve gained an understanding of the Liquid syntax language and Shopify theme structure.

The instructor shows you how to start with a standard HTML/CSS3 site and then convert it into a Shopify theme. The result is an outstanding and practical course that will teach you exactly what you need to know in order to start developing Shopify themes. This was a great quick dive into how Shopify themes work. Even though the last update has been two years ago, now in August 2020 it is still highly relevant. Wish it had been longer, with more topics (like an update with each Shopify API update), and connecting more to the documentation. My biggest struggle of this course was Sublime I am not used to IDEs without automated reformatting or autocomplete suggestions anymore, and most of the times when I was struggling, it was a simple comma or spelling mistake.
