In this game dev course, you’ll learn how to make a 2D turn by turn strategy game using Unity, C#, and Photoshop (or a free alternative).
Here is a list of the keys things that you will learn by watching this course:
First of all, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to create an entire game from A to Z, from art to programming to sounds to game design! By the end of the course, you’ll be able to make your very own 2D local multiplayer strategy games, which you can share with family and friends.
The game we will bring to life is simple, but will teach you the fundamentals of many tactic/strategy games such as turn by turn systems, attack & defense, moving characters on grid–like environments, placing units, gaining resources and more! All with the C# programming language– if you understand the basics of coding, then this is the perfect opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of those fundamentals (such as functions, arrays, vectors, if statements) and learn extra tips and tricks related to turn by turn games.
You’ll also learn how to make your own game characters. Starting with sketching, inking, and coloring using a 2D art application like Photoshop (but most of what is taught can be done using free alternatives, such as Gimp or Krita).

Love this course, and love BTP. This is a good starter course for anyone wanting to make a tactics style, turn based strategy game.
Phil Chung –
A short, fun, info packed course on creating a 2D turn based strategy game. The BlackThornProd team really knows how to keep your interest while explaining Unity and C# topics. Looking forward to their next courses.
Erich Baker –
it tought me every step

I’ve been developing games with unity for 3 years now, so there wasn’t much for me to benefit from this course, but since it was a course from blackthornprod I bought it to support him. This course offers a lot for beginners considering its price. A great way to start learning unity and game development.

Great Course

It is what I expected (having followed the course creator’s YouTube channel). Doesn’t hold your hand very much, but is not too difficult.
Daniel King –
Don’t get this course if at all interesting in the creation of the art, as it is glanced over at best
Freddie Cardino –
So far this seams to be simple and to the point. I hope by the end the scripts are simple to read/understand for me to edit and customize.
Josh Murphy –
So far the course is accomplishing its intended purpose, but isn t explaining steps very well. Still early

This course is amazing! It does teach the basics on the 2D strategy genre and invites the student to be creative with the progress of our own project. However, I perceive the code is a bit messy and the game ends up with some bugs, perfecting it would be a final exercise if you’re going serious on publishing your game, as the bugs don’t seem to be resolved by Blackthornprod. Anyhow, it’s a great course overall and I highly recommend it!

The Brothers have a great attitude and they encourage you every step of the way on the path to making a 2D turn based tactics game. The topics covered are fairly comprehensive: art, animation, sound, ui and programming albeit the basics of each. This course is a great starting point for someone who has some familiarity with Unity and Photoshop (if you want to follow the art portion of the guide). I found the animation portion particularly useful, watching my little cartoony characters come to life bouncing and bobbing was quite fun. The videos are highly edited so the user is going to need to be familiar with Unity to be able to make their project look like the tutorials. I would have also preferred a little more explanation for why we took particular approaches specifically to the programming. There are always a million different ways to do something and it can be useful to understand why we went in one direction over another. Overall this is a great course for jumping in and getting your hands dirty making a little 2d game. Though the game you have in the end leaves much to be desired it makes for a great jumping off point for the creator to try their hand at game design by turning this foundation into a fun game of your own.

Uses lots of bad coding practices. You’ll end up pausing the video to catch up and learn nothing. Also, I find the instructors speech pace very annoying.
