If you have even a slight interest in making games, then this beginner game maker course is for you. We will work together over the next 4 and 1/2 hours to make a really fun game which will leave your family and friends in disbelief that you created it yourself. There’s even a challenging boss fight to conquer. You’ll be amazed at how easy the program is to use and navigate once you begin.
I’ll show you the basics of building using Gamemaker Studio, giving you the tools to then move on and start creating your own games. Some things you will learn include:
Controlling your ship with the mouse and keyboard
Adding multiple enemies and multiple enemy attack patterns that increase the difficulty over time.
How to add a menu system, and a save and load system.
The power of parenting objects to minimise the workflow.
Creating multiple powerups to make the game more fun and engaging.
Utilising simple, but useful, effects to make the game feel more alive.
How to incorporate a boss fight that returns periodically, but offers more of a challenge each time.
Great sites that give you free sounds and music to use in your own games.

I must admit that it was the longest 4.5 hours of my life (more like a couple of days), but I learned a lot. This course was designed for GM 1.4 and I was using GM2. Still, I managed to create the same game just by finding the function names on the GM manual. Things that can be easily done in GM1.4 were extremely easy on GM2. Syntax like depth was easily done in code. The only one I did not find was instance create(); so I had to use instance create layer(); instead. I had to type the word Instances a lot, but then again I made the game!!! Thank you very much Peter. Nice Course indeed!!! Kudos…

I found this course to be very enjoyable and informative. I certainly picked up many useful tips and a sound foundation in creating a small game and incorporating some good effects to make it a little more polished. The instruction was spot on and the explanations were useful in knowing why something was being done in that way. I’d definitely recommend this course and I’d certainly look at other Peter Morgan courses to take.

There is a lot of useful material in this course that I will be able to apply in my own games. The instructor is thorough and the course is right on target. The course is an enjoyable learning experience. I look forward to taking another of Peter Morgan’s courses in the future.

Thanks a lot!

Very good explanations, stepwise refinement, though I’m not a native English speaker, I can follow Peter’s clear and understandable voice very well.

This was probably one of the best GMS tutorials I’ve done by far! I used GMS2 and though the interfaces are different between the versions, if you are familiar with where everything is, it’s not completely far off. Also, a browsing the Q&A section resolved a lot of issues I was having. Concepts were explained well, and I especially appreciate the extra pdf regarding homing missile theory. Definitely recommended!

Very good introductory course to GameMaker. It wasn’t hard to follow the course using GMS 2 and some googling.

Even though this course was intended for GM1, it’s very easy to replicate in GM2 with a few small modifications. Alongside the Castle Raider Platformer course, Peter has made my 2 favorite Game Maker tutorial courses. Very fun and very engaging courses, can’t wait for a 3rd one!
