UPATE February 2020

Massive update:

– Lambda chapter has been re–recorded with new slides and content!

The Java engineering team has been busy for years to see the shortcomings in the earlier versions of Java. Every 2 to 3 years a new and improved version is released, each time mixing proven concepts from other programming languages and the strengths of Java itself.
Java 8 (codename Spider) was released in March 2014 with a vast number of language updates.

Get yourself up–to–date in this course with all the new and great features this version of Java has to offer:

* Lambas and function references
* Streams for functional programming
* Default methods for more flexibility when evolving APIs
* Using Optional to create awareness around null–values in your APIs
* The new Date/Time API to cope with all the past issues of handling time

The course is based on a lot of examples, to help you understand as easily as possible the issues that were addressed with Java 8.

Instructor Details

My professional career started ten years ago when I graduated from the university of Ghent (Belgium) with a masters degree in computer science. During my eduction I've always had a strong focus on software development. Thus I started working as a technical consultant and gained experience as a software engineer in several large scale applications. My technical expertise was greatly appreciated. Part of my job description became guiding and training others where needed. After a set of successful projects, I've received the opportunity to become a solution architect. With this change I've become more focused on how systems work together to fulfil a set of functionality instead of designing for one system in particular. Teaching and supporting others in doing their job has always been a big part of my life. Therefore I possess the necessary skills to help others learn and focus on what's important. The course is generally well done and explains all covered topics in a decent speed. I especially liked the format of the video course: Each chapter starts with an introduction followed by easy to follow explanations of the new features, with diagrams and code examples and ends with a prepared set of JUnit tests which demonstrated the new Java features with real code. This gave me the chance to watch the most part of the course on the train (with about 1.5x playback speed). Afterwards I took about another 2 hours at my desk to make all the unit tests green, mostly by myself, with some sneaking into the video material again. The course covers, as stated, only static/default methods in interfaces, lambdas, streams, optional and the new date time API. It does not cover extended type annotations, improved type inference, method parameter reflection, new security features of the JVM, JavaFX and may more changes in the APIs and toolset. Unfortunately Stijn tripped over his tongue a few times and at least some of these glitches I would have cut out or recorded the scene again. Also some of the code from the git repository did not match the video anymore and some tests even got wrong. But that s really about all criticism I can come up with. So, I rate this course with 4.5 of 5 stars, great job!

    Great course content about some of the Java 8 features especially Lambdas and Streams. Very good amount of coding exercises. Great use of coding exercises using Junit tests and great explanation how to use the right solution to the coding problems based on theory given. Some video editing issues which do not effect the teaching of the course. Hopefully will add even more examples over time.

    This is perfect for my needs, which is a concise overview of the API with examples. At points there is editing work to be done, but that was just a small section about 1/4 of the way through.

    The content being covered is good, but production values are below average. There are lots of issues in the delivery that could have been edited out of the video to give a more polished finish. When the speaker makes a mistake, he pauses, then says 5 4 3 2 1 before continuing. All these mistakes should have been edited out during production, but they are still present in the finished video. A post production proof viewing would have identified these issues before publication. If you can see past these editing issues, it’s still a good course.

    Dude, you need better editing… when you mess up start counting down from 5 its very annoying.
