Kubernetes provides a few decent deployment strategies out of the box. However, they might not be enough. Canary is missing.

What is the canary deployments process? How should we implement it in Kubernetes? Which tools should we use? We’ll try to answer those and quite a few other questions.

This course will guide you through the journey of practical implementation of canary deployments. We’ll use Kubernetes because it makes many things easier than any other platform before it. We’ll need service mesh because, after all, most of the canary process is controlled through networking and changes to Kubernetes definitions. We’ll need a few other tools, and we might even need to write our own scripts to glue everything into a cohesive process.

The end result will be a set of instructions and a live demo of a fully operational canary deployment process that can be plugged into any continuous delivery tool. We’ll define the process, and we’ll choose some tools. Nevertheless, we’ll do all that while making the process agnostic and applicable to any toolset you might pick.

straight to the topic, as usual, victor touches areas that other similar instructors don’t hit, such as using prom metrics to automate deployments…

Inline with Viktor’s productions: a whirlwind of techniques shown in a very practical way, in a record time, and very well explained. It is very comprehensive, although without some baggage in istio / Kubernetes it might be hard to follow for some students, I believe. For example, the metrics and monitoring part is given a bit oo fast (I would have liked more details on the metrics of istio’s observability features). The CD part of it, being limited to a script is a bit simplistic: Viktor, you commented that you tend to Jenkins X, but you let this open to not to be too opinionated. There is nothing wrong with it, but as everything else in this course is already opinionated (flagger, istio, Kubernetes), introducing a component for CD (Jenkins X) would have been perfectly fine (the icing on the cake, so to say) IMVHO. Overall very good.

To the point and very clear. Fast replies on questions. And extensive i.e. Victor takes his time. Also have a look at his book series DevOps Toolkit. Eg 2.6 is a great introduction to Jenkins X.

A very good step by step teaching process, focused on canary deployments using Istio as the traffic management and other tools like flagger to provide the automation. After going through the part of manual deployments with Istio, I was able to provide a confident presentation to my whole team at work.
