In this capstone project we’ll combine all of the skills from all four specialization courses to do something really fun: analyze social networks! The opportunities for learning are practically endless in a social network. Who are the “influential” members of the network? What are the sub–communities in the network? Who is connected to whom, and by how many links? These are just some of the questions you can explore in this project. We will provide you with a real–world data set and some infrastructure for getting started, as well as some warm up tasks and basic project requirements, but then it’ll be up to you where you want to take the project. If you’re running short on ideas, we’ll have several suggested directions that can help get your creativity and imagination going. Finally, to integrate the skills you acquired in course 4 (and to show off your project!) you will be asked to create a video showcase of your final product.

Instructor Details

Christine Alvarado is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to coming to UCSD in 2012, she was an Associate Professor of Computer Science with tenure at Harvey Mudd College. Her current efforts are focused on designing curriculum and programs to make computing and computing education more accessible and appealing, with the specific goal of increasing the number of women and underrepresented minorities who study computing. Her work is funded by several grants from the National Science Foundation including a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award and a CISE Pathways to Revitalized Undergraduate Computing Education (CPATH) award and a Computing Education for the 21st Century (CE21) award. In 2013 she received the A. Richard Newton Educator ABIE Award from the Anita Borg Institute for her contributions diversity in computer science education. Dr. Alvarado received her undergraduate degree in computer science from Dartmouth in 1998, and S.M. and Ph.D. in computer science from MIT in 2000 and 2004, respectively. She served on the College Board's commission to design the new Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles, and recently served as a co-chair of the NCWIT Academic Alliance. She is currently general co-chair for the 2015 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.

    great course I learned lot things thank you for you efforts . but I have tow observations , first about the capstone I waste a lot of time looking for dataset and thinking about an idea for the capstone , second observation is that Leo speaks fast and have a weird accent , it’s not easy to follow him. thanks again it was a wonderful course.

    Definitely one of the best courses I’ve had the chance to take on Coursera! If you want to learn how to define and delimit a project scope, learn how to predict and estimate risks that could arise in developing a software project, and, finally, get to combine all the skills learnt in the first five courses of this specialization to build powerful interactive software, then this course is for you! Dive in, you won’t regret it!

    It’s okay. I would like to learn something besides graphs which I don’t find interesting. I thought this course was on data structures but it seems to be mostly on graphs which are only one data structure.

    This is basically a do it yourself project…you can be lazy, not research and do the bare minimum, or you can take it seriously, read papers and search online and in books if you so please and end up with a beautiful project that is truly of your design, with algorithms that would have seemed impossible before the project but that you now see are not at all that hard and quite enlightening. If you working hard and not do things with a handicap, you can do something amazing wit this guidance!
