I’ve been a code school instructor for the last several years and I see a ton of awesome going on right now in the teaching/development world. Code–schools, sites dedicated to teaching like Udemy, free, online tools like codeacedemy and youtube, etc. Through all these different mediums available anyone can learn a convenience store manager, a housewife, a nerdy high schooler, or a bro–grammer; without any experience or a 4–year commitment to college, anyone can learn how to code and before you know it you ve made something awesome. The problem I m seeing in this phase, in my students and elsewhere, is that the no one s getting all the way there. Setting up a development environment and building a project is 95+% of the process for a beginner and that s happening, but everyone is focusing on just that part because it s the main part. Unfortunately no one ever gets you the last 5% of the journey. Actually getting your code out on the web is a very overlooked thing.

Yes, there are plenty of tools on devops, but there needs to be a resource available that s specific for developers, to teach them to do what they need to do. Junior and mid–level developers don t need to be proficient in docker, chef, kubernetes, jenkins, cloud foundry and all the tools of AWS/Azure, they just need to be able to maneuver around a server to get things done. That is what I aim to accomplish in this course.

Rob is a great instructor, who has a good grasp on how much information to give the students so that they more fully understand the material without overloading them. He takes the class at a nice pace, with plenty of reviews on previous work if needed.

Robert is a great instructor. I’ve completed some of his other courses and I always have a great experience, 5 stars. … Which is why it was difficult to give him less for this course. Robert is amazing at explaining topics. He communicates extremely well and he’s likable. I’ll cut to the chase. I have 2 main gripes with this course: 1) The content is too shallow. Robert always releases courses that are small, modular and concise. It was a perfect style for his Node + Express course. But in this case he covered way too little information. Most of the sections are just duplicates of each other, just with a different language/framework. I definitely would have liked to see more services. 2) The video quality is too low. Gone are days when we actually used 720p monitors. It’s been 13+ years since those were relevant. There is no reason anyone should be uploading these courses in 720p. I know they can upload them in 1080p, because Todd Mcleod does it. Udemy will then let you downscale them to 720 if you need to save bandwidth. Consider the video where Robert shows you how to get connected to AWS on Windows with putty, it was pretty much impossible to read the text. Yes, I know some instructors cheat and just increase the font size and he could have increased windows scaling, but that’s like drinking orange juice when you’re sick. Upload higher res videos. Also, look at that particular video, what’s with the black padding around the video? Wasted space. So, I would like for Robert to release more content for this course, and do it in 1080p. Then it would be 5 stars.

I think instructor should limit the topic inside of the course, with a broad knowledge from React, Ruby, Python, the course could be overwhelm learner. Also, I think we could add RDS related things to the course so that people can have an actual experience for their future development with AWS, limit in one server with installed database is not a tragedy for actual employment.

Rob is a great instructor! He demystifies deploying projects using AWS in an easy to follow, step by step fashion. He also shares a wealth of knowledge about why something is important, how it fits in the big picture, and even the history of it all without being boring. Rob is definitely not one of those instructors where you just follow along you actually learn!
