Excellent overview of web programming with Geospatial data. I highly recommend this for any beginners. For those with more experience designing web applications, there are a number of points addressed that often are overlooked in typical tutorials. This was a great dive into using open source tools and provides a great example of the tools in action. – Student Review on Udemy

Thank you for this course! It fills a knowledge gap that I wasn’t even aware I had. As a GIS scientist without formal computer science training, a lot of what you are teaching here will come in handy. – Student message on Udemy

You truly have inspired me to take a step away and focus on learning more webGIS. Thanks!! – Student comment on Twitter

Michael is an incredibly knowledgeable instructor who assumes no prior knowledge. The course content builds up from some very basic coding practices to complex interaction between client and database via a server. Although it was not expected that the exercises were completed I did indeed follow along and now have a fully–functional webapp that I can modify to suit my needs. For an introduction, this course covers an incredibly wide range of concepts covering not only the display and processing of spatial data but also some internet security measures and even a little history thrown in which makes it much easier to understand the possibilities and limitations of Web GIS. I am thoroughly looking forward to starting Michael’s Leaflet course. – Student Review on Udemy

Instructor Details

I have been programming and working with database applications for over 30 years, and specializing in geospatial applications for over 20 years. I am a believer in the 80/20 pareto principle which suggests that you only need to understand 20% of a subject in order to do 80% of your work. My goal in all my courses is to teach at the level of that 20% sweet spot and to provide my students with the background and the tools they need to learn the rest of what they need on their own.

De cursus is heel uitgebreid, bevat heel veel informatie en geeft je een goed beeld van web gis applicatie ontwikkeling. Een verbeterpunt zou nog kunnen zijn dat de concepten wat beknopter worden uitgelegd.

I found the course worth inspiring and leading to web GIS development through open source tools. A good coverage to all the front and back end. Keep it up and Thumbs Up to the instructor’s efforts.

This seems like it will be exactly what I’ve wanted. The course does a good job of giving a high level, end to end summary of web mapping components and how they fit together, in the context of a set of simple practical examples. This is a great starter course for those who want to dive later into details of each component (html, css, javascript, leaflet, turf,…) while having a good grounding in how it contributes to the bigger picture of web map publishing.

This course appears to be a good match given my experience with GIS and some programming in Python courses I’ve taken before. I look forward to learning more about the basics of web programming for GIS applications.

Course is out of date. Some of the lectures require OLD OLD software. Which you have to figure out on your own. Course is useless when you get further into it.

This course is actually what I have been looking for as a GIS professional; how to put everything together in web application design. I really enjoyed the course and learnt a lot especially on JavaScript and diverse use of PostGIS in geospatial manipulations. I thank the Instructor for a holistic package and a beautiful presentation . Thanks

Yes, It is a good match thus far. The flow of instruction is good and hopefully it will get enough detailed when I have to display a live map from PostGIS data.

Easily the most informative and well structured course I have undertaken in years. Highly recommended to anyone wanting a solid understanding of developing web application, not just GIS systems.

Very good instructional tone thru out the course. The content pushed me in directions that were truly beneficial, but sometimes over my head (meaning more independent study needed). I waited for prices to go down, and after waiting I finally dove in and started the educational process. The pre courses I didn’t want, before finding out I really needed the insight (making a more total learning). Paid for additional courses and have wish listed a bunch more.

If you’re new to programming or thinking about getting in to it, this course is an essential starting point. I’ve done other courses that help me to understand different languages and start writing them, but I’ve never fully understood how to bring them all together in an app/web page. This course joins those dots in a comprehensive and easy to understand method.

As a non programmer interested in GIS and Web mapping, I wanted to find out how the pieces go together and the capabilities of each component (not necessarily learn to write code). This was the only course or information I could find that attempted to do this. I have to admit, it was a information overload for me but I am still deeply grateful for it.
