Hi, I'm James. I have helped thousands of people learn how to develop their own games in Unity, and whether you're a first-time developer, or need to refresh your skills, I can help you learn to make the games you want to make. With a bachelors degree in Computer Science and a background working in independent game development, I have been helping others to create their own games and release them on multiple platforms. I believe in helping you learn by teaching code in context, so rather than having to memorize a bunch of stuff you've never seen before, you learn how each coding concept can be applied to real working problems in your games. I can't wait to help you learn all about making your own games and how to make them a success. So why not start learning to make games with me now? See you soon! James

I am a complete beginner with Unity and coding in general, and I think this course was a perfect starting spot for me. I learned lots of things that I can utilize and learned things I can apply in other areas, and I’m excited that the once faraway dream of making me own game actually seems feasible! Thank you so much for the course James, I learned a ton and you were able to explain foreign concepts to me well enough that I felt I could really understand them. Can’t wait to take my knowledge to the next level!

The teacher has taught animation and scripting movement far more intuitively than any other instructor I ve bought courses about Unity from. He focuses more on the tools Unity gives you instead of telling you that you need to come up with all the code and parameters yourself, which is very nice.

Der Kurs bietet so ziemlich alles, was man f rs 2D Programmieren ben tigt.

As a programmer, not particularly here to get knowledge on C# coding more working in unity, however I feel that some of the coding isn’t particularly best practice but rather simplicity for simplicity sakes. Good to get people to start but inefficient in parts. Still good for a beginner to get into Unity and coding to start with.

I’m intermediate with Unity, so my experience with the course was very mixed. At the start of the course, the instructor tended to spend quite a lot of time explaining the very basics of the Unity and C#, so I just had to speed through those hoping I didn’t miss anything important. In contrast, when it came to the more advanced sections of the course, he didn’t spend enough time explaining the code, I ended up just copying what he did without understanding (the absolute WORST thing you can do when following a tutorial). It would’ve helped to have some sort of diagram or something to explain the mechanics and functions in a visual manner. Additionally, I may not be the wiser, but I get the feeling that some of the methods the instructor uses are good coding practice, like using strings as identifiers, and there were many areas that I think could be taught with more efficient techniques (e.g. why not use Scriptable objects for the likes of the BattleMoves, BattleTypes, or even the CharacterStats?) By far the worst part of the course was Section 105, where he leaves the students up to quite a difficult challenge. This would’ve been alright, if it weren’t for the fact that he didn’t provide a video with a solution (I know you can download the completed project at the end, but that doesn’t really help explain the code). I just had to skip it so I could complete the course without wasting time. Overall, I did in fact learn a small handful of skills from this course that could help me make my own RPG, but I’m going to have to do a whole lot of tweaking to the code from here for it to be more flexible to my own ideas.

Way too hard to follow for a beginner. At times, I found myself going 2 to 3 videos back and still not being able to identify why I broke the game.

Course is great at keeping subjects that would ordinarily be quite dry in nature, fun and engaging! Feels more like a very knowledgeable friend helping me learn than someone teaching me (which can often be tiresome and very ‘by the book’) Great course so far!

Since this content is aimed at teaching beginners, it’s discouraging that there are errors that were pointed out 2 years ago that have yet to be corrected, and good luck on hearing a reply to any new questions. Aside from that, there is plenty of great content to learn, but if not for the other people enrolled helping to fix the errors, this course wouldn’t be worth touching based on this level of neglect.

I really enjoyed the course, James is a really good instructor, going over all of the things. As an experienced programmer, I would like to see things more organized in folders, dynamic loading of objects and working working mostly using the code behind making the work much more generic, and easy to scale.

I’m glad I have some Unity experience so I was able to wade through this mess. 1. The course hasn’t been updated lately and the instructor’s Unity version is out of date, so many things work differently these days. 2. Concepts are not explained in much detail (if at all), so the course is a code along at best, not a way to learn. 3. The instructor uses poor programming practices and hacky workarounds to make things work, setting up students (and himself) for failure down the road. 4. One lecture included a solid ten minutes of the instructor trying to solve a bug created by #3, and his solution was to make things hackier. There is some value to be had from this course if you have experience programming other game genres but are new to RPGs, but you’re going to have to work for that value.

It’s unfortunate that this was the only course on Udemy I could find covering turn based RPGs, and that’s the only reason I gave it two stars. I haven’t seen a single question answered by the instructor in the Q/A section on any lecture. There are several instances where the code/systems he shows you how to create have game breaking issues with them, which in most cases are fixed by other students, if at all. He gives you a challenge towards the end of the course to create an item system while battling, but never shows you how afterward. It’s not even in his complete project he gives you at the end of the course. After this challenge, I gave up. I just listened and watched to save some time and pick up some things here and there. The lectures are frustrating because some things aren’t explained well and you’ll end up doing 3 steps only for him to realize you shouldn’t do it yet/that way and go back to something else. It’s poorly organized and planned. I also seriously doubt this should be considered a beginner course. I’m new to Unity, but not new to programming/coding, and he was generally moving too fast for me to keep up and understand. At best you’re just parroting him and not really learning how/why things work without spending 2x/3x the time playing with them on your own.
