The world of programming has become almost saturated with different languages, all created for different purposes but developed for use in multiple applications. For those just delving into the world of programming, this can be a little overwhelming. Luckily, there are plenty of languages that are simple to learn, highly versatile to use, and make a great starting point for gaining fluency in the coding universe. Perl is one of those languages, and this course will teach you everything you need to know.

Become an Expert in Perl Applications

This course has been specifically designed for those who have an interest in programming, but still consider themselves to be beginners. Those who already have programming experience but want to learn the basics and concepts of Perl will also find it perfectly suitable.

this is a true crash course that will get you up to speed in no time. You’ll get to grips with Perl fundamentals and design a Perl application, as well as creating automated applications that do the work for you and advanced text analyser applications. But don’t worry you’ll work from the bottom up and progress at a pace that suits you, starting off with installation and creating more complex applications with each stage.

This course was very disappointing. There are glaring errors in the code, it fails to teach many basic things beginning Perl developers need to know, and as a result many of the code examples would not run on a modern Perl system. First, the developer instructs us to download the Padre IDE, an IDE who’s last release was in 2012 and is now abandonware. The OS X binaries are no longer available and the native installation instructions for it are probably beyond the skills of most beginners. After that was the traditional Hello World example and I had high hopes because it clearly showed the use of strict and warnings, something that is mandatory in most development environments today. However, the authors skips over the explanations of those and then doesn’t use them again in the course. As a result, while strict and warnings are required in most Perl development shops today, the majority of the code in this course cannot run without them. For example, correctly declaring variables with my, generally a requirement under strict, should be show in lesson 4 when variables are introduced and then used for the remainder of the course. Instead, the author doesn’t show this syntax until lesson 50, private variables, and he omits much important information about what is happening. Array syntax is also explained incorrectly. For example, the author shows accessing a single element of an array via @players[0], but that’s the *slice* syntax and had the author used warnings, he would have had a warning saying Scalar value @player[0] better written as $player[0]. This has to do with something called context (far beyond the scope of this review) and this concept is also not explained in the course. Arguments to subroutines are explained shown incorrectly and the standard syntax is not shown at all. References are not explained. The file manipulation work is badly broken. Calculating the size of a hash is broken. There is virtually nothing about this course which is correct. I started by giving it a two star review, but even that would have been too generous.

Very good course in my opinion. If you have some programming experience in other languages then this is perfect course to quickly learn core of Perl. Lessons are short and focused on their goals, style of the instructor is more hands on practice examples and minimum theory. So, maybe it is not for total begginers, but even if you are a beginner you could give it a try. What could be better? Well, this corse would be perfect if there were some coding exercises and a couple of quizzes would be nice. Summary: I recommend it!
