TL;DR

This is a complete guide to understanding access control and security with OAuth2 and OpenID Connect Core quickly and intuitively.

What?

This is a fast track course to understanding how OAuth2 and OpenID work and are recommended to be used today, based on firsthand recommendations from conversations and workshops with the creators and working groups of the OpenID and the Financial–Grade API standards. I’ve tried to make it concise so that you can understand it quickly!

The specs can be quite intense, but they’re very important. I’ve compressed information about implementing OAuth2 and OpenID based on many RFCs, real–life practices and conversations with industry professionals. This course considers the latest recommendations from the OpenID community, including Google, Microsoft, Auth0, Okta and Ping Identity.

Use this course to save yourself time and/or get a big head start on some further reading!

Why?

Open banking is picking up around the world and developers are finding themselves having to learn these standards better.

For developers, its a great learning experience to pick apart Proof of Key Code Exchange, handling network errors and different types of JWT.

If you’re a developer that wants to add cyber security to your skill set, this is a great entry point.

Instructor Details

Hi everyone, Hope you're well and making the most of e-learning at the moment. Learning new things online is great for personal development, careers and side projects. I'll explain the topics I teach. I am a professional software engineer that specialises in data privacy and security. I've most recently been working with international clients as a freelancer. I've also worked in a Fortune 500 company, in a big business publishing company and I was the first engineer hire at a fast-growing FinTech startup (2018-2020). I have developed complete mobile applications, backend applications, RESTful APIs and secure end-to-ML-end data pipelines in production. My courses, which are all about data, data privacy, data security and open banking, are topics taught from industry experience. My goal is to create courses for things that I, and others, have found as obstacles. It will help you to learn stuff faster and more intuitively than other courses, for your personal progress. Or your money back! Stay learning, Dexter P.S. I also freelance as a developer and technical writer. For business enquiries, get in touch at dexter@patn.tech.

So far, it is a little bit below my level of knowledge, but this is to be expected for an introduction. Information is concise and clear, though the videos themselves could be improved by having more movement and fewer instances of slides remaining in place while the lecturer is speaking.

Very good course, well explained, with a good insight to the basic concepts, patterns and wordings of OAuth2. I especially liked the comparison to SAML and how to put OAuth2 into a more general application security frame. Good explanation of what OIDC adds to OAuth2. And finally a very helpful short list of do’s and don’ts when using or implementing it.
