If you are a GIS professional who has been interested in exploring the options for open source GIS, there has never been a better time to start learning. The release of a major new version of QGIS means that what you learn today will likely be valid for many years. There have also been many improvements that make it a reasonable choice for your core GIS application.

In this course you will learn:

QGIS is not perfect but I believe that what it does, it does very well. Especially with multi–user editing of enterprise data. I am not anti–commercial GIS, however I do believe that all GIS professionals should have a good understanding of all their options so that they may choose the best tool for the job.

Instructor Details

I have been programming and working with database applications for over 30 years, and specializing in geospatial applications for over 20 years. I am a believer in the 80/20 pareto principle which suggests that you only need to understand 20% of a subject in order to do 80% of your work. My goal in all my courses is to teach at the level of that 20% sweet spot and to provide my students with the background and the tools they need to learn the rest of what they need on their own.

There are resources (simple but specific image files for the most part) needed that are not supplied with the other resources meaning that you might as well be watching a youtube tutorial. So save yourself the cash and watch a youtube tutorial. It will probably be more up to date.

The best, most complete QGIS course I’ve bought. I’ve been using QGIS since before version 1, and I learned a ton of practical methods and tips for real world use. My only issue was the many references and comparisons to ArcMap, which I have used, but not much, as I cannot afford to use it commercially.

I was a bit apprehensive about taking a course for professionals at this stage in my career but Mike made it easily understandable and accessible. In many cases I was glad to know that a thing is possible or available and was able to file that away for closer study another day. In other cases I was able to follow along comfortably and achieve more than I thought I could. Great value and enormously helpful. Thank you!

It is interesting that he touches on both Qgis and ArcGIS for comparison which is informative. It was worth it, I acquired sufficient knowledge on QGIS.

Some of the files that are used in the video are not uploaded!! The raster data are not available for download.

I had previous experience of using ArcGIS and basic knowledge of QGIS. My work was looking to start using QGIS and I needed a course to get up to speed with the current version of QGIS. This course gave me a good understanding of the basics. As a Landscape Architect, I was most interested in learning how to use vector and raster data, how to create my own shapefiles and to the ability to create viewshed analysis. The course goes into greater detail than I needed on attributes and geoprocessing but I can see how that would be useful for people that would need to use that information.

This is a great QGIS course and the instructor is honest, very knowledgeable and take his time in explaining almost everything you need to know. Don’t expect to learn GIS, but if you want to learn how to use QGIS, I would highly recommend this course.
