Unreal Engine 4 has become a leading resource in the creation of games, animations, television shows and illustrations!  In this course we will take the absolute beginner from knowing NOTHING about Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) to a workable understanding of:

Scene setup

Importing assets & characters

Lighting setup

Basic material setup and application

The Sequencer (Unreal Engine’s animation & editing timeline)

Setting up a simple animation

Importing audio into the Sequencer

Rendering your movie out to a movie file for further manipulation

Instructor Details

I've been making films and doing visual effects on indie films for over 15 years. When I discovered Unreal Engine 4 I was blown away by it's realistic real-time rendering engine! I immediately saw that Unreal Engine (UE4) was a game changer and that it had now become possible for a small studio consisting of a few artists to pull off a Hollywood quality feature length animated film! In the past it would take hours, if not days, to render each frame of an animation, which made it impossible for an independent artist to complete a full length film. It would literally take years to render all the frames of a movie! All this has changed with Unreal Engine 4 - the playing field has been leveled and it is now truly up to the talents and skill set of the artist/storyteller to create their vision. No longer will you be held back due to limitations of technology. Join with me as we begin a journey in using this awesome tool-set - I think you will find it not only fun, but extremely satisfying on a creative level.

Yes, I’ve not used UE4 for over a year so this was really helpful. I chose Michael’s course because I’ve done other courses from him and I like the way he explains everything.

Great course for total beginners. Nice presented, easy to grasp and the professor does it in an engaging way. I reccomend it if you are a total newbie to UE4.

Only just started but I am really enjoying this! He explains things thoroughly and visually so you would have to have rocks in your head not to be able to follow along. Already worth the money and plenty more yet to do. Thank you!

I’m just beginning this course, but so far it’s what I’ve been looking for in terms of a basic introduction to the Unreal Engine.

It’s only 720p very bad. Specially if you are on a 5k monitor. Mouse movement and shortcuts (for movement) are all Windows only. The most are completely different on a Mac.

Hey Micahel, Its was really smooth and full of knowledge. Just one thing I wanted to point out hope you don’t mind, I was hoping there were couple of videos about making some materials and adding different maps like normal, albedo, roughness etc…Otherwise it was an amazing journey with you. : ) It was my first ever online tutorial so I am really happy, I’ll surely share with you after doing my project. Hope to get more interesting and informative videos from you. Also if you can help me out with any good from basic to intermediate level UE material tutorials I’ll be really grateful. thanks again.

I’m new to Udemy, and this is the second course I attempted. I started another one for absolute beginners but found that the explanation for absolute beginners was lacking and the instructor unresponsive to student questions for 4 months. However, the instructor for this course made everything the other instructor should have spelled out from the start crystal clear by his more than adequate explanation of how to properly set up a scene. I appreciate his enthusiasm and mastery of the subject and will definitely take more courses from him. If, in spite of my warning, you are thinking of taking the other absolute beginners course, which is more focused on game creation and moves rather quickly along, and you’re actually an absolute beginner like me, I would suggest taking this course first. You’ll be much better prepared to handle other courses covering topics related to Unreal Engine 4.23. Thank you, Mr. Ricks, you’ve made learning this previously obtuse subject a pleasure.

The course was very well laid out. Enough information in each lecture to learn and retain without being overwhelmed. A ton of useful information in a short amount of time. Would definitely recommend this course. Mike did an amazing job!

If it successfully introduces Unreal to me then yes. So far, so good. It’s very basic. Little more than the UE wizard would offer.

This is a great beginners course if you are looking to familiarize yourself with Unreal Engine. I have experience in other 3d software and was looking to get started in UE4, and this tutorial has made me feel comfortable and given me a nice foundation to build upon.

Really great primer for anyone either coming to the Unreal Engine for the first time. Or those like me returning after a year’s hiatus. What makes this course special is its emphasis on Animation a crucial part of game making many other courses do not have this.
