Getting started in game development doesn’t have to be scary. All you need is the passion to learn and an inquisitive, experimental nature for combining code, animation, graphics, artificial intelligence, art and audio. Sounds like a lot? It is, but when you see how you as a solo developer can bring it all together there’s a touch of magic in the air.
Unity is the number one game development engine due to its ease of use and yet powerful abilities. It works on all platforms and can export to desktop, console and mobile devices. It’s a great way for the beginner to jump straight into the world of game development and get their hands on the tools used by AAA game studios to produce games such as Hearthstone (Blizzard Entertainment), Cities: Skylines (Colossal Order) and Monument Valley 2 (ustwo Games) and best of all, for the beginner and hobbyist it is free!
In this course, Penny demystifies Unity’s interface and plethora of tools to bring art, code, design, and more together to produce a fully–fledged First Person Shooter game completely from scratch. Using her internationally acclaimed teaching style and knowledge from over 25 years working with games, graphics, and having written two award–winning books on games A.I., Penny will take you from complete noob to a confident user of Unity. Throughout, you will follow along with hands–on workshops designed to take you through every step of becoming familiar with all the functionality of the game engine. Throughout, you will work towards the creation of a First Person Shooter set in a post–apocalyptic world complete with zombies out for the player’s brains!

It was early in the course, but I just wanted to comment about how excited I am to be diving deeper into Unity.

Penny delivers another great course on unity that is easy to comprehend yet powerful. This course is helping me develop my own FPS that I have been thinking of making for some time and now I have the tools to make it a reality!

Very nice through the whole process course. Have had long exp with unity so I did not catch so much new, but found this a great reminder and a course that would have saved me a lot of time as a newbie… Not so found of playing games myself but find it very entertaining to learn how they tick…

While the course covers some of the basics, it doesn’t really introduce Unity in any depth (i.e. navigating the IDE, how to find documentation, the API, etc) so some may be confused on completing the course. It also doesn’t really cover C# either, so I think beginners taking the course will be initially lost on how to scale a game or to utilise common mechanics that are present here (but are closely coupled to this specific game); that is, common patterns and practices aren’t put to much use or described well; a functional style rather than a way to ‘think in Unity’ (and to a lesser extent C#, things like separation of concerns, DRY principles or the use of common interfaces). This makes the content lack polish and unsuited as reference material for making games. The challenge style for tasks should be split from the main content so those who completed a challenge have the option to skip the solution (especially if there’s useful content after a solution). There is a complete game here though and the style may suit some but there are better, more structured materials to learning Unity development.

Excellent course for anyone wanting to learn Unity #D Programming. Very easy to follow. half way through and I have learned a lot of new concepts. I look forward to the rest of it.

The course seems good and i am making notes on my desktop notepad of things i may need to know for the future as we all know no one is perfect. But overall i am getting the hang of it and would love to see more things added into the course like a menu system when you first boot up the game, Better weapon animations and some general overhaul of some things but overall im liking the course so far and can’t wait to dive into more.

It was a long course but definitely worth it

Great course Penny. Really helped me understand Unity better. Building a complete game is also a fantastic way to learn. Highly recommended.

This is a great course for learning the basics of several key programming functions. The FP controller instruction gives you a good model for character control, the introduction to terrain design and particles is great, and the animation lectures are fantastic. The instructor takes the time to explain everything to you and gives you challenges to test your learning. The instructors are responsive to questions (although sometimes you need to be patient and wait for them to get to you) and can assist with tweaks you want to make to the code to capture the feel you are looking for. This class will not teach you everything. You will definitely need an introduction to unity and C# before jumping in. However, you will learn a lot and have a tutorial you can go back to when you need reminders. Thank you Penny for the great job!

What I’ve learnt from this course is that you should put tens of audiosources on each game object, you should create God Object and put all the Spaghetti Code in here, you should avoid SOLID principles and OOP patterns at all costs. This game is very poorly managed, it shows that the author doesnt have experience of working in real teams on real projects. If I’ve never seen other Penny’s courses I would’ve thought that some woman who knows Unity for a couple of months decided to make a course to earn easy money. 1/10 in comparison with GameDev.tv complete 2D and 3D courses. This course is teaching other people wrong things. I am sorry to say that but, Penny, please delete this course, don’t embarrass yourself. P.S. Sorry for my english

The way Dr. De Byl describes various parts of Unity with just enough theory to clarify things, and the use of visuals to go along with them is immensely helpful.

Great course that covers lots of the basic parts of producing a game. Very easy to follow with great explanations throughout. Well done
