Product is rated as #38 in category Unreal Engine

In this series I will be taking you with the setup of a large number of different materials to teach you how to utilise the Unreal 4 material system in a practical way.  We will start with some theory on how to use the material UI, the PBR workflow, and addons to the system such as layers and material functions. Then we will move into practical demonstrations, creating new materials each video to cover as many different elements and designs as we can.

Across the series we will look at:

Opaque

Translucent

Masked

Light Functions

Deferred Decals

We will not be exploring UI, Post Process, Volume or Skin shaders in this series as those fall into a more advanced category

Instructor Details

Im Daniel, I have been working with the Unreal Engine for almost 12 years now, and spent the majority of that employed as a Unreal Technical Director, working with the Film Industry. I have also worked on a number of games, arch-vis, VR and AR projects, and various other mediums. I love to teach and share what I have learned, and help developers who may be experience the problems I also went through.

Presenter is very knowledgeable, but doesn’t take the time to explain he why you need to use a particular tool. Great to be able to follow instructions to a end result, but quiet something else to have creativity sparked by explaining (especially to novices) what a particular tools is useful for…then use it in your application. Again, very knowledgeable but I think more explanation would be great!

Great insight into materials and how you can use them to great effect in Unreal. Definitely a starter course however. A couple of things to note here. A couple of times, resources were used that aren’t provided such as models created in Max and then Imported, or the blood spatter in the decals section. It would be good if these resources were provided, via a github repo or something like that so you won’t have issues. I used blender to create the mesh for vertex painting and for the water sections and then had issues with the texturing. I was able to lift a few ideas from this and apply it to a scene I’m working on (parameterised emissive material instances) and it solved a few issues I was having. I’d hope more will be added at some point, to the skin section in particular. A great starting point for those new to UE4

For a basics course, this was a good option, however, I found the explanation of each function a little lacking. You eventually start to figure out what’s going on after much repetition, but initially I was left wondering at times. This isn’t helped by the quick acceleration of the tutorials. I recommend reading the descriptor of each function (ctrl + alt) as it’s not fully explained in the tutorial series. But a good starting point.

I’m looking for some advice that I can apply to making game FX and the materials related to such projects. I’ve made advanced materials before by following tutorials, but I’d like to get the skills I need to go off on my own and start really customizing my own materials. Tutorial tells you how to make some cool mats relatively easily, but I wish the instructor went into more depth on the nodes and functions. Even if he says lerp node, for example, I’m not confident that I know what lerp is supposed to mean or what exactly it does.

Seems to be good so far. Not sure about some of the stuff, but I guess that’s to be expected, since it is an introductory course. Edit: After getting into the actual meat of the course (A.K.A. Video 5) I have next to NO IDEA what this guy is doing, how he’s doing it or where he’s getting the textures from that he’s asking you to just magically know how to use. I’m about 5 minutes from asking for a refund and the sad part is, I got this on a Black Friday Sale for $9.99.

Nice entry level course. Good, but not very deep.

Brilliant course, learned so much! easy to understand, so much so that I managed to adapt the vertex paint tutorial to be able to paint puddles down on the blue channel !!!! and I am only a beginner !!!! Would really love if you could do an intermediate / advanced materials course I would sign up for that in a heartbeat. Looking forward to doing more of your courses soon. Regards Andy (also English hahahaha)
