Video games as a medium go back more than 50 years to mainframe computers. Even the central design of video games can be traced back to the first games themselves. To be a good game designer, it’s essential to have an understanding of the video game design industry’s fascinating history. We’ve partnered with The Strong National Museum of Play to give you a unique look into the history of all things video game. The International Center for the History of Electronic Games at The Strong is the largest and most comprehensive public assemblage of video games and related materials in the world. The staff are celebrated experts in the field and the ICHEG is visited by scholars of video games from around the world. You’ll gain amazing insight into the history of video games with a guided exploration of key artifacts from the collection of more than 100,000 electronic games and materials.

Instructor Details

Stephen Jacobs is a Professor in the School of Interactive Games and Media at Rochester Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in Game Design and Development. Stephen serves as a Visiting Scholar for the International Center for the History of Electronic Games at The Strong National Museum of Play. He is faculty lead for the FOSS@MAGIC, one of the largest and most comprehensive free and open source software university programs in the world. His current game projects are primarily focused on the areas of games for learning and health. Previous projects he worked on include game/narrative design for Just Press Play and Martha Madison’s Marvelous Machines. He co-developed MindGamers, a bio-feedback game designed to improve treatment outcomes for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. For more information, please contact ritonline@rit.edu.

    This course offers a brief but insightful overview of video game design history. Presented as a series of short video lectures and extensive supplementary reading, it covers game design history from pre 1700 table top games though to the modern day.

    The content is mostly great with some good insights into the cause and effects of game design evolution and how it relates to culture and society. Treatment of the modern era is especially brief, e.g almost no mention of the rise of the indies, and it is largely left to the student to draw conclusions on how history has shaped contemporary game design.

    On the down side, all of the assessment is simple fact based quizes, and the there is very little discussion between students in the forums, just a lot of single comment posts. I think a better approach would be to add some peer to peer assessment, e.g write a paragraph on your thoughts about topic x and have peers give feedback. Good feedback is the hardest thing to get right in online learning and this course does not really address this problem.
